The idea of anyone willingly giving up meat is fairly baffling to the pork-chop-loving Estonians, so it is no surprise that Tallinn has no exclusively vegetarian restaurants. But vegetarians will not starve. Catering as they do to the international market, many restaurants in the Old Town have made one or two taimetoidud (vegetarian dishes) available. These range from fairly uninspired concoctions of stir-fried veggies or grilled cauliflower to very decent potato pancakes or stews. Note that salads and soups that would seem to be meat-free by their menu descriptions will often contain bits of ham. Consulting the waiter when ordering is the best way to avoid any surprises.

Ethnic restaurants, particularly Indian, Thai and Chinese, usually have the most promising vegetarian selections, often with a whole page of options. Italian restaurants will always have a pasta or pizza dish that is made without meat.
